GG - that seems very unfair (though sadly familiar). Do they expect you to have any kind of work-life balance?

Not really, and the responses I'm getting from immediate line managers are not exactly helping me bounce back from my disappointment.

I did some research on women academics in STEM who'd been on a career development programme and one of the comments that sticks in my mind was "This scheme has made me realise that it's not just me: everybody is treated badly." That obviously doesn't make it OK though.

I hear you G_g. I only got SL because I came in at that level from industry.

GG that's rubbish and I'm so sorry.
I've had similar experience, some of my colleagues are senior lecturers just because that was the role available when they applied. Some have little or no teaching experience and do less than those on lower bands.
I won't even go in to my recent experience of fixed term contracts because I'm still really sad and angry about it. But I'm about to start another job in HE and I'm not sure it's such a good idea.

The precarity of academia is one of the worst aspects and seems to be pretty similar in other countries as well, sadly. I'm actually in the fortunate position that my job is being made permanent (across the OU, not just me). I do earn less than I used to though as a 25 year old working as a chemist. That's in actual numbers, not accounting for inflation. Teaching is scandalously badly paid in general.

I am wondering if I need to move to get SL. It would be a shame, but there are other things going on that are pushing things closer to that threshold where I start looking, although I'd feel awful for my PhD students (which is how they hook you).

I have to say we don't need grant money for SL. Publications, yes, but module leadership and other teaching/admin counts.
