rhb - you'd have the benefit of the last long, not easy run, at Leeds - as long as you rest up between now and then. Abingdon is definitely a fast course with lots of company at the pointy end.

Thanks WW. How are you?

Good and bad news from my physio. She thinks there's no reason I shouldn't be able to sustain this reduced level of training for a few years so as long as I'm happy to bimble round in 3.15ish my marathon days may not be over.

good of you to ask LMH :-)

I had some largely experimental treatment on my troublesome / arthritic ankle in late Jan and there has been a marked improvement since. Nothing is certain given that it was experimental but the consultant thinks I may still see further improvement for another month or so from now. After that it's a complete unknown as to how long the new plateau will last. For now I'm back to doing a bit of pain-free running. When you've done literally nothing for over 6 months the thrill of being able to even do a bit is amazing. As is being able to walk to the bathroom in the morning rather than crawl.

Apologies LMH, I don't recall the root cause of your on-going knee issues but if it is osteoarthritis-related then I would recommend a quick google of the nSTRIDE procedure that has a strong track record in the knee....I was the 5th person in the UK to have had it in the ankle.....

Oooh that's exciting WW. I expect marathon thoughts are a long way from your mind but I'm sure you would be thrilled to be able to run properly even at a slightly less intense level. A gentle jog on a sunny spring morning has been a rare joy for me recently but the weather is entirely to blame for that!

LMH you shouldn't be too hard on yourself with 3:15s, you were still top 10 in your age group!

Good to hear WW, hope you continue to see progress and can continue enjoying your runs and hopefully progress too.

LMH, keep the chin up, sounds semi positive news, train where you can and times will be whatever they'll be.

That is excellent news WW and I know exactly what you mean about being able to run at all after thinking you might not. My knee issues aren't OA though generally the presentation is like that now. I will have a look when I have time to do so properly.

I know jda but whilst I don't like to hold on to past glories in my heyday I'd have been in the top three and possibly first this year looking at the winner's time. We always want more don't we? It's what gets us out of the door.

Leeds & Abingdon entries in.

3 immediate changes from Mcr:

gel every 30 mins as per pack advice not every 30 mins as I did.

More focus on food in the days before to ensure carbs loaded properly

6m45 cap on mile splits but hold 6m50 where poss.

Almost laughably, minutes after paying I learned the fastest pacer group at Leeds is 3h15. So the option to stick to a pacers heels isnt there πŸ˜…

I know everyone is different but a gel every 30 mins seems a lot. If you can stomach it then great but I think it would make me feel a bit sick.

I ran with a soft water bottle on Sunday with Marten 160 drink mix in it. Had a gel at 6 miles and another at 13 and then just had the drink in the bottle from there on. It was the best my stomach has ever felt on a marathon and energy at the end wasn't the limitation, it was the leg lift. Still have a bit of a left thigh strain today :(

I carry about 120g of sugars (in the form of jelly babies and kendal mint cake) and eat every 10km, coincident with water stations to wash it down. I'm not going to waste energy carrying any more water than I have to! Maybe I should really pare things down and rely on the gel stations but never wanted to take the risk.
