Yes there is. The last character missed from post above was the less than character.

Stander - think it's a security measure to stop people trying to hack the site - your formula, whilst harmless, would have looked suspiciously like HTML and the security would have supressed it

if(a1 [less than] 40179,0,40544-a1)
returns a value of 0 for all dates before 01/10/10 (value 40179). For dates after 31/12/09 but before 01/10/11 it returns a value equal to the number of days within 2010
Is what I was trying to type.

Next cell would use values 40544 and 40909 for 2011, etc, etc, etc

insert appropriate number of columns (3 in this case) and have an end date of 31st december for the years 2010 - 2012. if it will always be a similar number of years that the grant covers. just call them year one, year 2 etc.
then you can do it as simple subtractions. if you want one you can update with any year i'd have to have a bit of a think. if i had excel in front of me i could probably mock it up that you would only have to put in a start and end date the others would come up automatically. but i don't. sorry.
and if you use the less than character on the forum here, just make sure you put a space after it and it should be fine and will stop all text after it disappearing.

Thanks for help - sadly I'm none the wiser. I've emailed Stander for further assistance.
