I quite like the idea of learning to operate a whizzy thing that allows me to put numbers in little boxes so it can turn them into other numbers. But it just looks like a rather colourless version of a fruit machine to me. Occasionally, I think I should try to learn what the cells are for but then I remember an interesting bit of syntax and go and do that instead.

I can operate Excel but in a very non-maths way.

It always looks so like something that could solve all your problems. I think part of what makes me not investigate is fear of being disappointed.

Stander - got your email - brilliant, thanks. Took me an hour or two to work out how the formulae worked (nested if statements aren't my favourites) but got it all sorted now. Many thanks.

"...nested if statements"??? This is sounded more like my kind of thing. Perhaps there's more connection between the black magic of the spreadsheet and syntax than I suspected?

When I was a young programmer, there was a 'C puzzle book' that was absurdly popular.
Sure there's a market for an Excel one. Or a daily excel puzzle desk calendar.
