can you open it in Safe Mode ?
Click on your Start Button > Run then type excel /safe
Then File > Open and open your doc

If that doesn't work - Depending on your version of Windows try this :-
Find the file in Explorer. Right Click on it and see if there is an option to 'Restore Previous Versions'
You may be able to recover and older version of the file and have to recreate some data but it's better than losing everything

by jove bigleggy, I think you sorted it! when I right clicked, there was no option to Restore Previous Versions but under Properties there was a little sentence that said something along the lines of "this file has come from another computer and has been blocked for your own good so there" but it did give the option to unblock so I did and I can now access the file.
