Wegelius's bio makes it sound like hell, and to be fair I can see some of that, doing what you love every day and it can well turn into something you despise. I have to be careful with writing, that's happened before.

But more than that having to actively hit a set of physical targets every day/week. Imagine if after your run, your boss came up to you and said 1 minute slower than you should be, ok 1 minute faster tomorrow or you see me. You might say " but if that's all you do every day..." but then how about these articles on lawyers quitting their day jobs to do running all the time. First set in 2012:

Sounds great. But by 2014... injured, disillusioned and some went back to the day job:

Give me a guaranteed salary of £25,000 a year from ultramarathon running and I'll take the nagging about performance. Plenty of elite athletes are every bit as inconsistent as I am. They're just inconsistent at a higher level of ability ;)

Trying to scratch a living day to day, race to race ... nope. That's another matter.

Yep I think Wegelius wasn't on 25k, and needed extra topups to make up the salary

It sounds as if those lawyer lads have had a mixture of experiences, and at least one of them found that he needed the day job because if he had all day to train he would try to train all day and run into problems.

I suspect I'd fall into the same trap.
