Ah, about time we had a Scottish post on here.....I did the WHW in 1997 (22:17 & 6th), tried again in 1998 but blew up big style at Crainlarich with heat exhaustion. Was sitting in 2nd place at the time and was gutted. One piece of advice for anyone doing it is that you have to forget all about racing for a good 6 months after. My legs were in bits for months after 1997 and it took me a good year to get back to where I was pre-ultra training. A few good races to build up to the WHW is the Speyside Way 50k, the Lhairig Ghru 28 miler or the Two Bridges 35 miler. These give you a small taste of what to expect although being on your feet on a trail for 96 miles is hard to prepare for. It's the mental tiredness as much as ther physical. All the best to those of you who are planning it.

What did you make of Lairig Ghru, Magoo?
Some evil person has planted the idea in my head that if I get a sub 4 mara at Edinburgh, I should go for it, or d'you reckon it is too far removed from a road marathon to even be considering without separate training?

Nooo, come home bonny lad, to the hills and the heather and Moira Anderson and the sixteen hours of darkness in midwinter and the sleeting rain and 80 mph winds!
