In terms of the draw it doesn’t matter anyway. It’s not tennis. Top four go in band one the next four go in band two.

True, it does mean they only play one of the top four though. Just checked and the final Football world cup 2022 draw was 1 April 2022. Seems only rugby see this as reasonable. |

It’s definitely not reasonable, and it’s weird doing a draw when so many of the teams are unknown. The problem you’ve got is you have the four Rugby Championship sides plus five of the six nations sides all being competent/challenging. 9 into 4 groups means 1 team gets stuffed. England went out in the groups when hosting which is a bad look, but were drawn with Australia and Wales. They got through in 2019 when in a group with France and Argentina. They got the France game cancelled because of the weather but would have gone through regardless. |

Can check different dates for rankings here: world.rugby Would probably need to be beginning of January cut? |

1st January 2023 would work. 2015 rankings just prior to the World Cup had Australia 2, England 4 and Wales 5. So not the first time it’s happened. |

X-post, yeah true one (and possibly the other two with them) would have a tough draw but at least it would fairer. I was going to say I'm sure I've heard the complaint before. I'm sure this World Cup draw isn't a one off in terms of timescale. |

If France don't make it I'll be cheering on Ireland I think it's particularly harsh for Scotland as they are in the same group as 1st and 2nd, that's ridiculously lopsided. |

Yup, one of top four and one of 6-8 would still be a tough group and unlucky for whichever of 5-8 didn't get through, but there'd be a sporting chance for either of them.
