I've ended up with 2.5 cauliflowers as someone going on hols kindly made 2 trips with fruit and veg and a couple of other items for me. I have to say that everything's run over the use by date, some by quite a bit.
As I'm so thrifty and buy just what I need; I'm not used to using out of date ingredients. I decided not to use the non-fruit and veg items as their date was 2 December. However, I used a big cauli yesterday, roasting it with Indian spices and adding it to my buffet tea. The leftovers will form the base of a roasted cauli soup today. I'll just add turmeric and stock, puree it then temper at the end with fried cumin seeds.
I've been given some pastry, leeks and cooked chicken so will make a leek, mushroom and chicken pie for lunch and to have cold at other times.

I asked for a doggy bag for the first time ever a month or so ago. I went out for dinner with my work colleagues and chose cheesecake for pudding. I was served a piece that was almost big enough for me to have gone bog-snorkelling in. My fork hand had ground to a halt before I was half-way through, and there was still a vast amount left, so I asked for the rest to be wrapped up to take home. The request appeared to be rather unexpected (on reflection, maybe I was snatching away the kitchen slave's snack) but the tinfoil-wrapped chunk of cheesecake survived the journey and Tink bagsied it when I got home. She reciprocated a few weeks later with some even better cheesecake from the Italian restaurant where she works.
When VP started working in a restaurant, having to throw out food that people had ordered and not eaten wound him up terribly.
My parents produced Christmas dinner for about twenty when there were only seven of us to eat it. I came home with a couple of boxes of beef and turkey and lots of puddings. I'm hoping the untouched chocolate cake and cheesecake will survive having been defrosted and refrozen.

I don't think I've ever asked for a doggy bag, but then I'm a pig and I will eat all of what I've been served up, even if it makes me feel sick! 😅

Me neither, Fragile Glass Bauble. I fear I am incapable of leaving food on my plate. I can't believe a piece of pudding being too big. It just doesn't happen. If I'd ordered it, I'd eat it.

By the way RS - I often use out of date vegetables, the dates on them are silly if they're stored ok. Yoghurt and other dairy last much longer ... you can easily tell if milk is off.
Admittedly meat and fish are more difficult. There was some classy stewing steak - 3 packets each reduced from £4.59 to 99p in the Co-op on Christmas Eve - use by was 25th, I casseroled it with booze, rosemary, black pepper and garlic yesterday (Peposo) . The Co-op is just round the corner so it went from fridge to fridge and I reckon up to 24 hours won't kill me! Nine dinners now in the freezer (Raffo doesn't eat meat)

Also poached a chicken that was a day over yesterday and curried most of the meat this morning. Another 6 dinners in the freezer and three meals worth of meat left.

I don't need doggy bags for restaurants for me, but sometimes friends leave items. I occasionally check other people's plates when courses are finished at dinner parties or restaurants and notice that mine is always the cleanest. Some of my friends' teens leave swathes of food on their plates and say they're still hungry; go and get seconds. Is that normal? Maybe it's the generation of having plenty. Their definition of empty plate is different from mine.

I rarely buy things ready-wrapped and go to the local butcher and fishmonger. I did buy some chook from my local butcher which was off. It's a v well-respected establishment across the whole of the city so I was quite surprised. What a pong! I took it straight back.
The think about using things past sell by date such as meat, fruit and veg is that food value/nutrition breaks down as time goes one.
Anyway, not normally an issue in this household as I'm so on it with what's in my fridge and cupboards.
As I'm getting my flat ready to sell, there may be a period when I'm without a fridge-freezer. I want to decorate behind it and it's big. It's also on its last legs, so I might have to get rid of it when I'm ready to finish decorating the kitchen.

I have a 300L chest freezer which I anticipate giving away when we no longer have so many people at home. At the moment it's still earning its keep. I fill any dead space with reduced price bread and rolls and tubs of butter and Vitalite because we get through those very quickly. Making sure things don't drift to the bottom and get lost is an ongoing task.
