It looks interesting, but needs lots of people near to where you are in order to work...

Yes, it's true. I downloaded the app this morning. There are two thousand users in my 'catchment' area (3 mile radius around my house in Leeds) . Most items get requested within an hour!!! I technically could have had a free breakfast :D

What a great thread! I like to think we are have little leftovers and food waste being only 2 of us I batch cook and freeze, rake leftovers for lunch. Buy fresh herbs chop and freeze.
I do use the oil from sundried tomatoes for roasting veg but left over veg skins for stock is genius! We always make our own stock after we’ve had a chicken and use the skins from that day.
I freeze lemons limes chillies ginger and buy when I can frozen cubes of ginger and garlic as there is no waste from those (& at 99p for 400g it’s a bargain too 1/2 cube is enough for most things I make)

Oops
Left over veg or veg coming to end of its best get made into soups.
We have got good at making the right amount of food for us but if cooking for more if we have left over mash for example I’ll make fish cakes. Veg our dog gets.

I only recently found out what a big issue food waste is with 33-50% of all food produced globally is never eaten. We could feed all hungry people with less than a quarter of that wasted food. But what shocked me the most was the environmental impact of all this waste: -An area larger than China is used to grow food that is never eaten. -If food waste were a country it would be the 3rd largest emitter of greenhouse gases (after China & the USA) -25% of the world’s fresh water supply is used to grow food that is never eaten
But what's exciting (although a bit scary) is over half of all food waste takes place in the home. Which means we can all do something about it
That's why i was happy to find this thread.

The Olio app isn't supported by my 'phone - slightly ironically it's an old 'phone I use because there's nothing really wrong with it other than being a bit outdated and it creates less waste for me to use one kicking around in someone else's drawer than buy a new one (and yeah, cheaper!).
I've reminded myself I have two big bags of veg offcuts to make into stock; as winter and stews etc are almost upon us it would be useful if I got on and did it!

I had Olio for a bit but then stopped the notifications. Bristol is quite spaced out and the offerings were too small to run around and collect - jar of pickle here; packet of apricots there and also some things which had been opened. OK if it's friends or neighbours you trust but I wouldn't take something opened from a stranger.

I've used leek green offcits in a cheesy pasta bake that was originally billed on Epicurious as with carrots as a way to smuggle vegetables into kids' diets. Either way it's lush.
