Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

The current actions of "DOGE" and it's actors are indeed breaking US law because under the constitution they are denying funds to programmes that have been appropriated by Congress - the President can set the *direction* but not do what Musk is doing.

*However* they are arguing in court that Musk is actually doing nothing and it is the agency directors giving the orders - which would be constitutionally allowed possibly - as I understand it.

But they have been told to stop by various judges and the SC has not vacated the USAID case and these judgements are currently being flouted.

But there is still an enormous leap to these breaches of the law and riding totally over well established constitutional principles.

It is sensible and encouraged to highlight the authoritarian policies and direction, but we are about 15 steps away from Trump proclaiming himself dictator in chief and banning all elections.

It will be interesting to see what happens if the Dems take Congress and the Senate, because more impeachments will shurely result.

I also wonder how his addled brain is approaching the prospects of multiple new legal jeopardies when his term is up.

But really, there's so much structurally wrong with the US now he could drop dead tomorrow and they would still be in the mire.

(I think the seats lost in 2024, mean that again they have to win in unfavourable states)

Well I think the house is **probably** a done deal already - albeit with a small majority.

But the Senate is now a stretch for Democrats.

It is true that the Rs have far more senators up for reelection than the Ds, but AL, AR, IA, ID, KY, LA, ME, MT, NE, OH, OK, SC, SD, TN, WV, WY are not going to vote for a Democrat no matter what.

So they've got to look at: TX, AK, ME, KS and NC for the 4 gains they need to make to hold the majority. It's unlikely TX, AK, KS will flip, so that's leaving only 2 battlegrounds they can realistically win.

*Plus* they have to hold on to their seats in GA and NH which are not givens and also hold on in MI and MN where their sitting senators are retiring. The rest *should* be safe.

So even in a highly optimistic scenario, the Senate would be 51-49 to the Rs.

There are really very few paths for Ds to retake the Senate under the current structure without giving statehood to DC and Puerto Rico.

To get to 50+1, the Ds now need to win *all* the battleground states.

The Rs now have a massive inbuilt advantage virtually assuring them of Senate control most of the time.

And that is truly a fair and reasonable position to be in :-)

Part of the damage he and Musk are doing now is precisely this, systematically removing the guard rails that prevent him doing what he wants in 3.5 years time.
