To make Fleeecy happy bit also because we need to talk about it.
Personally I find the week before my period the one when I have no energy, mental or physical so often don't run. I tend to find that it returns on day 2/3 and can get back running gently then. Tampons make me cramp so I use pads and a long night one pad and really tight knickers are perfect. For full disclosure I use cloth pads, so much more comfortable!

Tomsmum. High fives for cloth pads, I need to make some more as I have had to buy some ordinary ones recently.
Watching the thread for future replies and will keep a check on my period and energy levels and see if I have anything to add. My enthusiasm for stuff wanes quite a lot anyway, so I can't say if there is a correlation at the moment.

I think I am really lucky as my periods don't affect my running/desire to run. I do appreciate that others don't have the same experience and try to take this into account when coaching and talking to women or teenage girls about running.

Fierce and Fearless Fleecy
Hooray for periods! I remember as a teen our PE teacher would say when we had swimming 'just tell me if you have your period and I won't make you write lines while everyone else swims' and we would all say we'd forgotten our costumes rather than say we had our periods. Imagine telling a teacher that... Anyway, yes, washable pads are far more comfy I used to use a Mooncup for swimming, those are great. Exercise is actually good for cramps and stuff, but persuading yourself to actually do it when you're feeling a bit battered and sorry for yourself is another matter. Luckily I'm on the mini pill right now so I don't get periods, it's lovely to not have that one week every month where you feel rubbish. Before that I was getting awful PMT symptoms which really interfered with running.
Someone will have to start the pelvic floor thread next

TM I am exactly the same. I want to hibernate for a week then begin to lift day 2/3. I get an energised week post period though. I also often get a migraine a week or so before. The periods themselves aren't too bad but the hormone crap throughout the month is killing me and has got worse.

Cos of the endo I take a double dose of the pill so technically shouldnt have a period. But when I bleed its awful and painful and all the cramping gives me loose bowels just to add to the indignity, injustice and my outrage (I can't spell dia what's it).
I find running helps the pain massively even if I do feel I'm breathing through a wet cloth week before was always worse. I've run at least two marathons on the day I've started a period (they were four weeks apart - the race. Not my period)
Yes. Periods are fucking evil. I've only got one ovary now. How it can cause so much aggro I don't know. Mind you it also made my wee boy so ill forgive it.

Feeling thankful I've never had to deal with periods while running as I've had a mirena since before I ran.
One of my teens was complaining tampons always leak down the side-I always found this too. Anyone know if a mooncup might be more successful for her? I always like the idea of them. Are they tricky to get the hang of?
