Oh very well said Chris. Thanks so much for taking the time to write and provide such perspective and context. Really useful. Thank you. G

Self-defence isn’t for the sake of some eternal historical posterity, it’s for the sake of the people suffering oppression right now.

I mean, you could apply precisely the same logic to anything we do today, such as going to work or brushing our teeth. No one will know or care about it in 10,000 years, so why not just find a ditch to lie down in and die instead?

It’s fine to talk about history when you sitting at home on a computer. When bombs are raining down on your town or village, men from a different part of the world, or for that matter the same part, are raping and murdering your neighbours or there are tanks rumbling down the road, life is a bit different
Thank God, Vishnu, Allah or the giant oak growing across the road we aren’t in that position and if it becomes likely there are people who will stand and fight

You know, over the last few years I have tried to avoid reading what Chris has to say as I find his outlook on life quite depressing, doubtless he feels the same about me. I broke this rule last November, fool that I am, when he made some observations about the FR fiasco. It was a mistake and I instantly regretted it, so I'm kicking myself for being stupid enough to read the diatribe on the preceding page
Everyone is entitled to an opinion and it's truly wonderful that people have the freedom to do so in this environment (within certain guidelines of course), all the same, I wish I could censure the awful, defeatist bilge that he found it necessary to impart, I found it almost sickening. JDA and DT have it right above, thank the Lord that there are people out there who will defend our nation because it's clear there we can't rely on everyone.
I shouldn't be morose about this, on my Divisional Officer's course we did a module on how important it is to execute our role without judgement, all the same it's so, so hard to accept that this is how people are. I have always tried to veer away from the C word that BigLeggy used a couple of pages back, but perhaps it's as simple as that.

Shiva might be a better god than Vishnu in this case.
(Brahma the creator, Vishnu the preserver, and Shiva the destroyer).

I think use of the term coward is not terribly helpful.
How would people view ex-military who become pacifist?

Generally speaking I would agree with you.
