Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Oh of course yes I take what's on offer (did the poo stick just recently). And my wife has a family history of bowel cancer so has a few extra checks related to that. But my family history of cancer is a (smoking) grandfather who died of lung cancer and a sister with breast cancer, neither of which seem likely to indicate a big risk for me. FiL died *with* (not of) prostate cancer of some decades duration.

57.5 Degrees of Pain
The pharmacy chain in my home town (owned by a late 50s man I grew up with) are offering low cost (free if you were quick to sign up) PSA tests. Not sure if this is really a good idea given the sensitivity and specificity numbers.

The national screening committee site I linked to on page 4673 also has info on the lung check programme.

57.5 - it's similar for any of the DIY tests now available. It causes problems where personal HPV testing is done in addition to the regular screening programme as the cervical screening intervals are evidence based (for HPV negative). We have GP surgeries taking samples outside the programme to follow up a DIY test. Or being asked what being HPV positive means and what should they do (after a DIY kit). Those selling the kits need to take more responsibility, imo.

There needs to be adequate information available so the layperson can understand and assess the relative benefits of testing. However as a fair chunk of the public think that screening tests should pick 100% of the target disease (not really possible) there is a long way to go for that.

*all the screening intervals are evidence based, I meant the 3 or 5 year recall from HPV negative.
