Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

HappyG again re missing pension - have you tried the Money Advice Service? Failing that, the planned development of a Pensions Dashboard may help you in the future as that is supposed to link together all pensions from all providers, but they are not in place yet.

bja - sorry, I meant she left the employer not that she transferred out. She actually has 3 Final Salary Schemes albeit 2 are pretty small and I think has 4-5 small pension pots from various employers that we need to combine into one and see where that leaves us.

On endowments, I got a sizeable compensation a long time ago which was a surprise. I should have saved that towards the mortgage, but the children were young and financial pressures meant that got used. I had 3 endowments and when the first matured I cashed in the other two. I have since then been saving enough each month which should mean that I have enough to pay the mortgage when its is due next year. As its an offset mortgage, having that pot stashed away means that the outstanding balance is reducing each month.

Single-glazing Hells Bells? How extraordinarily ... quaint ;-) (The 35 yo double-glazing here could possibly do with replacement - or can they be renovated? Unlikely to happen.)

The way to be sorted pensionwise would seem to be "join the police". A friend of my friend joined on leaving school at 18, rose to sergeant, and retired at 50 on, reportedly, full pension. The Spanish costas do seem to have a disproportionate amount of ex-coppers living the easy life there.

Allegedly, aren't there also a disproportionate number of crime bosses also there?. 😁

Yeah, my sons girlfriends dad was in police and he was 'retired' at 50 and as far as I can make out got a nice lump sum and pension. Don't think he needs to work but does some driving and could get security work quite easily.

Although I think the police pension changed in (about) 2011?

Up to 60 for people joining after that.

Although, moneywise assessment of 'best jobs for pensions', who'd have guessed who does best?
moneywise.co.uk

Although it is generally backward, ie looking at pensions now, not, what if you start work now.

My place - the University - still offers a final salary pension scheme. You don't get it till you're 67 though.

We got money from our endowments in the mis-selling scandal and converted the mortgages to repayment. We also got some “free” shares when the provider Demutualised (still the only shares I’ve ever owned) - currently worth about 6k.

HG / bja - unfortunately I gave up part way through the endowment miss selling claim process, hence why a bit later I cut my losses and cashed in. That did mean that I was extremely persistent more recently with Mrs H’s miss sold pension from the same man from the ..., responding to letters asking for 30+ year old payslips etc. Who keeps those!! Anyway it was all worth it and she got a very nice compensation payout which she didn’t expect.
