Discovered that the previous owner had pleated the top of each curtain just a bit more than I needed and then cut the strings so they don't quite meet in the middle, though they will if we move the brackets for the curtain pole an inch or two closer to the window.

Doable, by someone who knows what they are up to in less than a week. I could rip it out.
