Clearly a delayed train in one direction delays the train in the opposite direction that the driver is supposed to take over; clearly any delayed train delays all the ones behind it, and so the timetable collapses. There are more variants on that which exacerbate the situation. They only pay their timetable planners £20k (it's been reported) so it's not surprising.
