I have just finished de-turfing and planting a section of food forest. Elder Black Lace, for the pink flowers to go into tea blends, teasel, marshmallow, verbascum 3 thalictrum black stocking for the bees and myself and 55 echinacea plugs! A local trade nursery holds gate sales and I bought a MASSIVE tray of overgrown plugs. Such strong root balls that I have dared plant them straight in situ. I have about 20 left to pot up and plant out elsewhere and give to friends and a charity plant stall.

Still finding it interesting to plant up those unusual crops Red clover has been self seeding everywhere after I scattered seeds a few years ago and am leaving those in situ when weeding. In my garden, you find a mish mash of controlled, edited and encouraged wilderness... I have to wander all over the garden to pick red clover

What pests do we all have to contend with? I am trying to re- establish my veg patch and not only has nature run rampant, I find myself bottle-necked as I have an over stocked little greenhouse but dare not put beans and such on the plot as it is not secured from my pests...
... very cute, but voracious deer!

I seem to be escaping the carrot fly and slugs so far but there are little bug things nibbling at my brassicas. My veg bed is a bit overblown at the moment with the sprouts and broccoli suddenly pushing everything else out of the way. I didn't really think about the practicalities of having growing 6 sprout plants. We don't eat them very often usually, but we will be doing this year...

My biggest problem has been cold! Temperatures dropping to 5 degrees inside the greenhouse equals no germination/slow germination. Carrots now in pots with copper tape to stop the slugs. Biggest problem is squirrels ripping fruit and ut trees and bushes to shreds to get to embryonic fruitlets. Last year, I had 2 pears, 6 apples and 5 plums off 6 pear trees, 4 plums, 2 cherries and 8 apple trees. I also have a quince that is already being shredded to a stump. Funnily enough, they seem to be leaving my medlar alone but my walnut tree has been destroyed! It is slow growing and gets frost bitten and this year is the first year it was growing well and was setting fruit. I now have to prune off all the broken branches, which will reduce the crown by over 50% 🤬😭
