During this very prolonged spell of dry weather, I've had the rare pleasure of going barefoot in my garden :-) - the soil is currently very dusty and soft.

I have been making the most of the dryness and got all my brassicas (a lot!) planted. With lots of watering they will have just about grown sufficiently to partly resist the slugs and snails which will resurface should we actually get any rain here.

I have made my last present of asparagus to neighbours as a thank you for getting my shopping. I have had lots of spears but the production is just starting to tail off now and the picking season will finish in a couple of weeks, so I shall enjoy the last few pickings :-) .

I found two patches of "wild" asparagus this week - one of which afforded me one spear, but mainly I was just too late. I have written a note to remind myself to find them next year.

Also been in the garden barefoot all week, it's lovely :)

Spent about half an hour with the hosepipe watering everything - hopefully that means it will rain for the next few days now, but the forecast doesn't look promising. Perhaps I should put the tent up in the garden and plan to sleep in it?...

Will you dig a trench around the tent just to give the rain a bit more encouragement? ;-)

Barefoot in the garden was my default in childhood summer holidays.

Quick trip to water the allotment this morning. I got there at 7.20am and someone else was using the hose! Not for long, though. Squash sown last week to replace the fox-affected ones have germinated already. I'll be very happy if it rains in the next two days - apart from anything else it makes the weeds easier to remove.

I would sleep in a tent if it guaranteed rain right now. :)

We have had a very gentle drizzle all day! I overslept by an hour, then decided to cancel my morning gardening client and potter. I ended up falling asleep again after lunch and didn't wake up toll 4, so cancelled my afternoon client as well! I have been working so hard for weeks, clients, my own garden, that I hadn't realised how much I needed a day off!

I went out late afternoon, to check on water levels/freshness of plants and everything has perked up :) I also found one of my chickens outside their big run again, two days in a row! I have clipped one of her wings in the hope to contain her! She obviously cannot get back into the run, where her water a food and shelter is. She looked VERY bedraggled and pleased to see me. I also got soaking wet trawling around the tall grass in the orchard/food forest trying to find her eggs, which I did. I also found the eggs of my other white hen! Hooray! The wayward things decided to lay in the wild!

I also had a whopper of a bonfire last night, with all the hedge cutting from last week. I waited until the dew came down and my neighbours (the difficult ones) had gone to bed as they hate it when I have a bonfire when they have standing grass. The sparks never fly that far and in the dark the bonus is you can see them! It was magical, with the light of the shrouded moon.
