Dahlia shoots have appeared - so pleased! I don't think it'll be frosty here. I've put tin cans covered in copper tape around them to try to keep molluscs from munching them.

My runner beans will go to the allotment next weekend. Maybe some squash too if it's warm enough, and peas and spinach and French beans and tomatoes and courgettes. Cucumbers might wait, they look a bit weedy.

I have spent all day tarting up and repairing my two cold frames. They have also been re-stained. I did not manage to find paint for the windows though, so they need to stay tatty. At least with new sides I have now been able to put the dahlias's in there and put the blanket over the top for tonight, to keep the worst of the frost off... I also put plastic bags around the magnolia trees (3x) and several bags around sections of the crown of the walnut. I am hoping this will keep the worst of the frost off and not kill them. They all got frost nipped last week/2 weeks ago and are just recovering... I can't cover my kiwi's. I don't think I will ever have success with them, as every year they get frozen to smithereens several times by late frosts and barely survive.
I fear for my fruit trees! Plums and cherries have finished flowering and are setting fruit. I haven't had any for several years because of late frosts. More worrying is that all my pears and apples are either flowering or have just started setting fruit. At this rate, I will loose the lot! Also my soft fruit is flowering. I hope it copes and the blossoms don't get frozen off. I am quite anxious... Oh, spuds also covered in fleece and debris netting to keep it all in place.

I will start new beans tomorrow, in the greenhouse, but the fruit is a worry :/

I hope that the wind doesn’t cause you any damage Hanneke. It’s been fairly brutal here today.

My beans and courgettes are getting a bit of tough love, I'm afraid. I don't have enough stuff to cover them all with. So I wonder which it will be? Shame really, the new leaves on them both are looking quite healthy!

Hope all is well this morning Hanneke luck

It didn't quite get down to freezing here, which I'm glad of as my fruit would also have been at risk, it's stupidly windy though. May need to apply some guy ropes to my makeshift cloches etc

Frost here, before I went to bed. Climbing hydrangea took a hit, as it does every other year...

Rare to be happy about the windiness. But it is holding the frost off.

(Clearly plants aren't too bothered about the wind-chill factor! The entire back half of the house is cold and draughty - and that's with replacement windows. I think it's coming through the airbricks and under the floors.)

Suddenly I've got 4 more tomato seedlings in the greenhouse. Which is nice, but I'm no longer sure of which sowing they are from! I'll find out when they get bigger and set fruit! My stupid mistake.

Still, there should be a nice long tomato season, since I've got 3 different sowings with 3 different varieties. Sowing no. 3 hasn't appeared in some pots at all yet - but the current seedlings could be from either 2 or 3, depending on whether I muddled the trays around or not. Labels. Must use labels.

Fragile Do Not Bend
I’ve prepared for a frost tonight - earthed up the potatoes and brought all the tender stuff indoors from the greenhouse.

I know it’s the right thing to do but I felt rather sad chucking compost on the little potato leaves that have struggled through and were enjoying the sun. :)
