My gardening this year has mainly been grubbing about in the dirt aka weeding, watering, edging lawns and planting a few seeds. Those i have planted have come up pretty well, although something has done for a couple of sunflowers and maybe a courgette, in the greenhouse. Grrr! (Both had 100% germination.)
There is a spreading weed in the garden (well, several, but one in particular) and yesterday i was under several fruit bushes rooting it out. Trying to get about 6-8 inches clear space round each bush. Several more to do today (i was lazy about this for a couple of years).
All under the beady eyes of a couple of robins, who'll pop up whatever I'm doing. One was even inspecting my neighbours work in a cellar yesterday. I think they are nesting in the eaves if the car port.

My gardening year has been mostly about bringing the whole veg patch back into production. It’s been totally neglected for at least 6 years whilst we’ve been increasingly involved in kids’ clubs and activities. It’s quite hard work freeing the ground from the grasp of the buttercups and couch grass, but I’m getting there. Seeds are here (finally) and a lot have been in compost for a week now so I’m hoping for some signs of life soon.
Fortunately we haven’t missed much as the ground is still quite cold.

It's raining
This is good in that it will refill the water butts and make me do some housework and give my back a break from more clearing the last of the pond "sleepers" and doing something about the mess in the corner behind where it was.

It’s good rain too. Nice and steady, filling the butts, not flattening seedlings or knocking the blossoms and flower petals off. And it’s also saving us having to go and water this evening, except for the greenhouse.

Yes, the lack of strength in the wind means that the rain is taking a long time to pass through, so we are getting a nice prolonged period of steady rain, rather than the torrential downpour causing the destruction that ER mentions.
I've opened up my pea cloche to let the peas have a good soaking, plus my brassica seed trays are having a nice drink, although later I'll have to bring those inside to stop the snails and slugs feasting on them.

I find that hard to believe. Surely it’s always raining north of Birmingham?

I don’t think I’ve ever been so pleased to see rain!
On the downside, the rain (I assume it was the weight of the water on the leaves) has knocked most of our climbing hydrangea off the wall. It wasn’t tied onto the wall in any way, it had been hanging on fine on its own until now. I don’t suppose it’s worth trying to tie it up so I’ll cut that section right down. There’s still a good 1/3 of the plant on a different stem that’s attached.
