Oh wow Fizz! I grew mine from crowns and it has been hit and miss with most crown not taking, but the three I planted last year seem to have, so with a bit of luck I will have 6 cropping crowns, not just 2...

Han, my asparagus crowns send out underground "spider" roots from which new crowns will form, so in a couple of years time you'll have more plants which can be transplanted. Mine propagate themselves so well that I have to give them away now!

The first three crowns have been in since 2014... 2 survived and have been cropping well, but 2 crowns don't produce an awful lot of asparagus, so in 2015 I put in 6 more, none survived, in 2016 3 more, 1 survived, in 2017 3 more, 3 survived, so last year I had 2 productive crowns and 4 babies sending out small shoots... I am hoping to have 3 crowns to crop from this year, and 6 next year. There is hooing they will self propagate in the future

I bought a packet of “Ariane” seeds, I think there were 15 seeds. We supposedly could have taken one spear per plant last year, as one year olds, but decided to wait. We currently have 11 crowns, of which nine are producing so far. It probably helps that they’re in a raised bed. I think I’m more proud of them than anything else in the garden And I love the fact that you can practically see them growing |

Wow Fizz!! I'm jealous...when did you have to plant the seeds? I'd love to try my black thumb at it because I love asparagus!

I've just read the rest of your initial post...2 years! Still, what time of year is best to plant the seeds?

Spring-ish, as far as I recall, so you're probably not too late to get some in this year.

rhs.org.uk is a good place to start. Of the pests mentioned, the asparagus beetle will be your worst enemy - see the 2nd half of my blog fetcheveryone.com/blog/37839/2014/5#blog312497 |
