Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

We've had frosts a couple of times this week so if you don't cover them you'll probably lose them again. Might be worth holding off for a week or so.

Thank you :-)

By the way, I'm turning into a womble/borrower. I keep seeing debris that the builders have left/abandoned and imagining new uses for it on the allotment. So far we have acquired several abandoned and broken scaffolding boards to repair the raised beds and the stake supporting our newly planted wild cherry was once a roof lath. There are a few other bits that I'm keeping my eyes on across the rubbish piles of the building site especially the metal mesh interiors of the fencing. Whenever it gets bent the builders throw away the panels. I look and see bean netting. Is it just me? :-)

Since most allotments are full of empty baths and pallet bins, I'd say not, Hel :)
This weekend will involve digging out my compost bins. They're half the size of my lounge room so might take some time...

no, it's not just you H, but you evidently have the skills to turn discard into something useful. Me, I just look at it, make a note to mention it to MrW, who looks at me like I'm demented, and then forget all about it.

Advice please. I have got some softwood pressure treated planters. I have half an idea to use them for herbs and or salad crops but want to stain or paint them. Any ideas what products I can safely use?

Many of the fence and shed preservatives/stains claim to be non harmful to plants and wildlife.

It'll probably be easier if you just pop into your local DIY store and read the product information on the tins.

Ronseal have brought out a range of paints for gardens this year. Might be worth looking at those.

shyfire line them with thick plastic sheeting - it'll help with water retention and extend the life of the wood as well.

The nice hexagonal planters I bought last year are pre-lined with plastic sheeting with a few drain holes cut through. But whatever they pressure treat decking with doesn't seen to kill off the bedding plants, I'd be surprise if it killed off your salad crops. Just a case of whether it would kill you off, I imagine!

(And since looking at them I've realised they're made of decking planks it's made my creative fingers itch!)

I've seen some amazing wisteria in bloom the last few days. :)
