Rivera felt like too much shoe on today's long run where I wanted to pick it up a bit. For context this is the highest stack shoe I've ever run in, so something I might get used to.

What's interesting with the Rivera (too much shoe when wanting to pick up to steady) and Escalante (too firm/ clunky for easy) is that HR stats are generally as expected, it's just about how it feels to run in physically. The Kayenta feels good at all paces.

I did runs of 15, 16 and 17 miles in the Kayenta earlier in the year, these were fine although feet knew they had worked by the end so they might welcome the extra shoe of the Rivera at the end of longer runs like that.

All this Altra chat plus the gap in my rotation for a higher stack option has prompted me to give the Torin 5 a try. Planning mostly road mileage in the upcoming months and would like to see how the Ego Max stacks up. SPR, I'm envisaging a possible scenario where I'm on an Escalante/Rivera/Torin rotation for training if the latter two work well for me.

Cool PAJ. I guess the Torin would work quite well for you if you're doing lots of long distance. I do wonder whether you'll need the Rivera and the Torin though? With getting the Torin first I guess you'll find out.

Yes, I've read some reviews that suggest Rivera and Torin are both quite similar. I just know I'll end up with a Rivera 2 for sure when we end up stocking it :P Maybe I'll develop a preference of one over the other, or there might be enough subtle difference to get use from both of them regularly.

Just bought another couple of Kayenta at the only place I could find with my size. Should last me a while if I can mix other shoes in with them and gives some time for other options to become available.

Torin 5 arrived. Only got it on in the house this evening but I suspect it is exactly what I wanted. Feels like a beefed up Escalante, Ego Max feels like it's going to be the type of ride I want, max cushion without feeling cumbersome. Hoping to get a decent run in them after work tomorrow.

First run yesterday in Torin 5. 9 miles, exactly what I was hoping for. Classic Altra fit, beefier stack than Escalante, Ego Max foam feels very compliant and reactive without veering into a cumbersome or clumsy feel on foot. Outsole coverage also seems good, so looks like it'll have decent durability. Unless any crazy negatives occur in next few runs, it jumps into contention for favourite road shoe alongside Escalante.
