Hi all - seems to be some good experience of the MK Marathon on here. I'm considering it as an option for 2014 but from what I can see you could summarise the race by saying it was hot (weather can vary, of course), well organised and supported, but unexpectedly hilly/undulating and thus no PB course. Would you agree?

Hi RicC
I live in MK and have also done the MK marathon. Mk is generally very flat compared to other places and the marathon route itself cannot be classed as "hilly". For the whole route there is a total of 238m of ascent, half of which is in the first few miles, the rest towards the end. (see here for elevation chart: http://www.fetcheveryone.com/routes-view.php?id=1303337&subtab=elevation )

Most of the "undulations" are foot bridges over roads or similar which should give you an idea of whats involved. The bits towards the end i suppose you notice more because you are tired.

Regarding being a PB race - it really depends on how "soft" your PB is - i know many did PB there last year, but its not a completely flat route like London or the GSR which i see you have done.

Hope this helps?

Chris

Hi Chris,

Yes, that helps a lot, thank you! :) The elevation chart is great, thanks - I didn't realise that you could do that so I've learned something new! Only been on Fetch, ahem... 7 years ;-)

I imagine that footbridges get harder the further you go on. PB isn't soft - I'm aiming to beat it and that is achievable but will be tough in any race and I suspect that this may not be the course to smash it but then, it is also down to the training. You never know, I might have improved it already at Chester this autumn!

I think it might be the one... thanks again for your help. I will have to follow this thread :)

I live in MK and am doing the half marathon "festival of running" in March - my first ever long run. MK is flat, and has "red ways" these are tracks and paths purpose built for pedestrians and cycles. You can easily run on these paths for miles without touching roads or getting muddy! There is a mixture of gravel paths (near horse trails) and tarmac paths. The only hill in MK to talk of is in Campbell Park, and as said before the odd teeny hump back bridge crossing over canal, river or the incline to a road. I am looking forward to my run - i think it will be a great intro to long distance running!

Hmm my experience of this over 2 years is it isn't flat! I ran ashby 20 that is described as a tough undulating course and has a hill score of 492, London is 382 MK is 502 ! Trust me those inclined nearly kill you at the end!
