Hi there, I was the person who started the other thread Stander just linked to. I was just talking the other day to somebody at my work whose specialty is iron metabolism and he certainly thinks it's reasonable that low ferritin levels can affect performance. I took ferrous fumerate for a while, which gave me me some nasty side effects. Just changed to ferrous gluconate, which have not produced the same side effects. I got both 'over-the-counter', and they are quite high concentrations (certainly greater than 140mg) but they not branded - I just asked the pharmacist for 2-3 months supply of pills. Hope it works out for you!

Not so lazytoad!
Well just thought I would update, I have done two months of liquid iron yuck Im now about to have another blood test to see if its improved any, fingers crossed! I feel better in myself in that im not quite as tired etc however I dont feel on top form yet and im still not finding the running any easier
Silly question does anyone have any experience of being treated for low iron not being anemic and the docs not really being able to explain why? Just feels a little like the docs are treating a symptom without getting to the cause........

Thats most of what modern medicine is. The art of procrastination until the body sorts itself out.

Actually,my kidney patients really do seem to benefit form iron even when their haemoglobins are ok
we push the ferritins a LOT higher, mimd
we use a lot of IV iron, gets round the horrid side effects
Now, I have a months worth sample of a new oral preparation called Globifer which isn meant not to give side effects havent dared try it yet, i gert issues with Spatone FFS

I've been taking the Spatone with apple juice. I't's a bit expensive but I'm feeling loads better and my running pace has improved. I'm due to go back to the Drs next week so I'll see if my iron levels have improved. I went a couple of months ago after a course of ferrous fumarate and my blood levels had only improved a bit at that stage.

After 4 months of ferrous fumerate 3x a day my serum levels have increased.
It's now 43 which, I think, counts as normal. My GP said that anything under 50 can be associated with fatigue etc etc.
My tiredness has decreased and energy levels increased. Wouldn't say all quite resolved tho but dose now 2x a day.
Loving JohnnyO definition of modern medicine. Think it's spot on. :-D

I remember being put under pressure to give pregnant/postnatal patients Imferon (which was very inclined to cause allergic reactions) instead of blood transfusions in blatantly inappropriate circumstances because the company that sold it was bankrolling at least one of the consultants.
My patients mostly got red blood and I got my reference from that job from a different consultant.
