I'll probably carry a few gels on the day but most of my long runs up to 16 miles have been fasted. Over that, I've tried a gel to make sure it doesn't upset me. Otherwise, a fistful of salted peanuts and raisins.

Totally with you all on the excessive use of gels opinion.
But despite that I'll be carrying an excessive amount around with me. It's entirely unknown if I'll take any, or all of them, on the way round, but my only reason for carrying them is to counteract insulin incase my body decides to play silly buggers on the day. In recent years with otherwise doing exactly the same thing during the marathon, one yeat I get all the way round and run a pb on nothing but water, the following year due to diabetic hypo towards the end I have to down all the gels and start licking Lucozade off the road at mile 23 before then spending an hour in the medical tent eating flapjacks and jelly beans.

That's a brilliant point, Spideog. Gels deserve to exist even if only because they make endurance sport safer for people at genuine risk of hypoglycaemia for medical reasons that can't be overcome by training.

Tapering. School holidays and only 1 5k planned in week and 6 miles sat. Have a 7 mile race Mon but will be doing it at marathon pace and 5k Thursday. Starting to worry this not enough? First marathon prob stressing about nothinh

Better safe than sorry for you Spideog
LMH - the Frys seems to survive intact in her bumbag. Not sure it would be a good idea long run training with them in the summer though!

That sounds like good tapering to me Sam t but I'm no expert. You definitely need to turn up on the start line with rested legs. Trust in your training, it's all there in the bank now (note to self here too as much as anyone else!!).

LMH - Doing alright ta. Went back at work, so (although I’m taking it easy) I’m no longer suffering from cabin fever and crap TV shows.
Pikelet- I ruined the finish line photo at Loch Ness Marathon, for myself and those crossing the line beside me, due to the reappearance of a late gel taken before the final surge!

LOL! A lesson learned and all that, apols for laughing! I have never bought an official photo but at least anyone else could say 'look it proves how bloody hard it is look at that guy rolfing up over there!'

Sam - there is nothing you can do now to improve your fitness but you could spoil your race by trying to do too much last minute. Relax, trust the training you've done and visualise running that final bit along the Mall having achieved your aim.
Must be very difficult to balance endurance running with diabetes Spideog, respect. I find that a good sign that I need a gel is when my mood starts to drop, that little bit of sugar perks me up no end - but I'm the same if I get hungry when I'm not running:-)
