Lucozade never tastes nice!

The gel advice is nearly as bad - the number of people who seem to believe that they need to take a gel on the start line and then one every thirty minutes - eat the day before and have breakfast people!

I've got a couple of gels in the cupboard to take with me to London. Wrapper says - consume up to 3 gels per 60 minutes of exercise. So for my estimated finish time that's 11-12 gels! Ha! Really?!? I don't think I could be arsed to carry the weight of them even if I thought for one second they would be needed :-)

I've trained on all my long runs without gels, I know I'm fine with them in marathons and have used them in half marathons before so don't expect any 'issues'. I'd rather stop on a training run and eat something a bit nicer if I need it.

My marathon training buddy is partial to a bit of Frys Chocolate Cream on a long training run :-P

I'm sure she'd share with you too Doc. Shame we're not in the same start.

Doesn't it melt?

I train without anything but do carry four gels for a marathon though I only usually eat three.

I'm probably a bit old school, but there seems to be a bit too much of this marathon science magic nutrition bandied about, and I see plenty enough blogs here and elsewhere that are full of 'I took this then, and then that then...' and too much spam from various companies lately about 'marathon nutrition' plans, in order to avoid 'the wall'. IMHO it's possible to avoid problems of energy by training thoroughly for the distance.

OK yes, I'll carry a couple of gels for a lift towards the end if I need them, but with some good training and a little care in the days before they'll be largely superfluous. Tea and toast before the start for me ;-)

Always porridge and a banana for breakfast. And a couple of gels more to make my head think I'm doing the right thing than because I believe it will make a difference.

I agree there is so much stuff suggesting there is a wrong way to fuel it must be scary if you don't have the confidence to trust your training to get you round.

[delurks - not running just now]

Pikelet - if you consumed 11 gels, they’d most likely make an unwelcome reappearance before the finish line!

I thought I'd received an e-mail telling me I'd got a bottle belt. Can't find it now. TBH I can't remember what I filled in on the pre-registration form or even if the option was available. I've not received one in the post so that I can 'train' with it. Maybe I dreamed it. Looks like I don't have to worry about belt chafing. :)
