I only attach a speed and cadence sensor on a turbot - and I suspect nobody* uses them for running.

I suspect Hammer's argument is specious. I shall read it again.

Does connecting your sensor to a Turbot make it wok better? Sounds fishy to me...

Right. I hereby declare I think Hammer's argument is bollocks.

Regardless of different devices using different datasets, a Garmin device records to TCX, a Garmin-native format that incluses, iter-alia, maximum speed data. How can 'maximum speed' be open to interpretation?

'Well Garmin says 31 but it should be 34'? Get tae France.

You can actually get a footpod for the garmin that will measure running speed in the absence of a GPS signal (for treadmills, mainly)

The TCX file has a seperate max speed field at the top of the file that was calculated by the Garmin using some algorithm at the time of the ride / run / whatever, using whatever sensors were available at the time. strava is (was?) presumably ignoring that and just looking at the raw location data, smoothing the speed over some period (which may be a different period to that used by the Garmin but probably can't be any less than 1 second due to the recording frequency) and then calculating the max of those.

Seems wilfull, Spouter - unless it is demonstrably more accurate, which I doubt.

This (from an MTB forum) I think sums it all up nicely:

---------
strava is only vaguely accurate. Don't get too caught up in times (ie, don't use it for racing for sheep stations).

Treat it as social media for cyclists and you'll be fine.
---------

On another note, I used to have a footpod for an old Polar, and it did what it did very well. Looked at getting a garmin one but they are quite pricey and I couldn't justify it.

Yeah, seems a bit weird that they could presumably have a social media for cyclists that was equally as accurate as Garmin Connect, Fetch et al.

The max speed thing aside (which could have several plausible if unverifiable reasons), I genuinely can't understand how the durations can be so different.

As I understand TCX files (which is very little), getting it 'wrong' actually takes more effort than getting it 'right'...

There are two people that really know about this stuff - one is Mr Fetch, and the other is HollyWoof who I believe is no longer of this parish.

I think it's "Do you know why strava is so inaccurate?" :)

About This Thread

Maintained by GregP
A sort of 'Why FetchEveryone is better than STRAVA' wire.
----

Last Sunday I cycled to church.

My Fetch log, which I trust beyond all possibility of doubt, tells me this:

17.07 miles, 1h19m46s, max speed 30.3mph

Garmin Connect, which one assumes is closest to the raw data, tells me this:

17.07 miles, 1h19m46s, max speec 30.3mph

This makes me very happy.

Now, gentle Fetchies, you may have seen or read or experienced strava recently, and been tempted, as I was, to 'dabble' and see whether it might be fun. strava taking data from the same source (my Garmin EDGE 800) tells me this.

17.1 miles, 1h20m48s, max speed 31.9mph

Interesting, eh?
