Today not tomorrow I think will be the Queen stage of the Alps.
Tomorrow - for those who don't know (I'm sure you all do!) has been re-routed and Galibier does NOT feature, instead they are doing the Col de la Croix Fer again from a different direction, which even if for symbolic reasons only, doesn't pose the same problems as Galibier (It's also 600m, which means less climbing and less altitude related difficulty). Alpe D'Huez itself isn't that tough a climb compared to the monsters like Galibier, again it's more symbolic and coming after tough climbs poses problems. People expect Froome to lay it on the line tomorrow, where as I think today with it's dramatic - no pre-amble straight up a 1st category climb will be the day when Sky attempt to make the tour safe, Movistar attempt to mug them. Anyway looks a fabulous day's racing!
I agree that today has to be the day that Froome is attacked. Given that Valverde has a long standing ambition of a podium, I doubt that he will be the rider sent up the road to force a selection and if he does get asked I reckon he will have a problem resulting in him sticking with Froome. It,ll be down to Quintana but can he take back 3 minutes.
Sastre sneaked a couple of minutes on the Alpe in 2008 but it,s too short a stage tomorrow. G has said there,s about 90 mins of racing across both stages and Froome will take it. I reckon it,ll be balls out for a bit more than that but I think Froome can almost smell the win.
And Valverde and Nibali join the break, Porte out the back already with Roche. Could be a bit of a day for Sky, 124k to go. I,ve binned attempting anything and I,m in front of the telly.
