180 quid for a race? You can buy a decent bike for that, or even 2 pairs of Inov8's!

I think the £180 ONER is at the more ridiculous end of the scale .. but looking around, the starting price for a lot of long ultras or multi-day events can be pretty eye watering: £350 early entry rising to £550 for the new (non stop) Northern Traverse. Considering it's just (haha!) the Wainwright C2C that I can run/walk for free, I can't justify paying that much to get 4 feed stations, while still expected to buy other food from pubs and whatnot on route.
I think the L100 is genuinely good value; I don't know/understand the 'charity' side of it, beyond the optional donation to Fix The Fells during entry, and I've no problem donating a little to that

iirc Manchester marathon is £50 rising to £80, and Brighton likewise.
LDWA 100 was £60 for members, £80 for non, this year. So not actually that different in entry price but far more support/food. I guess the difference is that it is not being run to make a big profit.
Things like the Northern Traverse, The Wall, etc are taking the piss in my opinion. But if they meet a market need and people are willing to pay the entry fee then good luck to them. It means that the bargain no-frills events like the Ridgeway, Likeys, etc are slightly easier to get in to.
And everything is cheap compared to Ironman!

Wow, just checked: the Wall is £200 now. Staggering.
Agree on the market need - they'll charge what they can. I think I've become a bit more objective about what they offer in terms of support over a solo effort; I've soloed Wallsend to Carlisle along the Wall in January, which was a bit parky, but less tarmac than the "official" run, and only needed a couple of pub stops. Not £200 worth of support!

Yep, I'm starting to think more about ultras the way I used to think about trekking, basically as self-supported expeditions, making use of the resources along the way. £200 can buy a lot of pub meals, Spar sandwiches, and the odd B&B when it's too wet to bivvy. C2C could be a good weekend outing

Is the wall around 60-70 miles?..... just looked it up, £200 for 69 miles, what a bargain, NOT!
