I don't think it's possible to run as hard as you can with others on your own. But you should be running to set pace that should be achievable based off a recent race time, so they should be achievable, hard but always achievable. Maybe lowering the target pace when conditions dictate, heat, wind, colds etc? |

Doing it on your own would be good training not just for the mile but general for races for those occasions when you find yourself on your own, or in the lead they call it transferrable skills

Tuesdays is my regular intervals night and there is a group of us at different paces that get together. Even running with mainly slower runners, by handicapping the starts there is always a bit of competition and need for a strong finish rather than a tail off into exhaustion. Thursday or Friday is then going to be my second "session" each week and is likely to be solo. I guess the trick is to set a pace that should be just about manageable, and it will be easier when it's light enough to see my Garmin so I know what I'm actually doing! Also have the possibility of use of a grass school track for intervals so that might help me with pace judgement and speedwork. That's a new one for me. I'll let you all know how it works. |

Does anyone know how to work out when tracks are booked for use and when you can turn up and use them? Specifically wondering about Bracknell or Palmer Park (my 2 closest). CW |

From my years of doing intervals I would say I have done 99% on my Jack and 1% with a group and you feel like you are flying running in a pack, it's bonkers. When doing on my own, I target the set pace, start at the lower end and build into the session. I read music can help as it distracts your mind, I like using music, until my daughters Taylor Swift comes on mid rep and has me trying to switch the song, not easy when your at 98%! |

I'd guess that it's a case of contacting the local council/whoever owns and operates the track. The school track I mentioned is available because I know some of the staff at the school (one of them runs with me on some of the interval sessions and teaches my kids).

Thanks Nellers. From others I know who have used the tracks they just turn up and hope it's not in use. I think lunch times are mostly free, but I was just trying to avoid travelling there (about 15 minutes drive) and finding it's in use. CW |

CW there's this runtrackdir.com Its handy because it tells you if a track is available for public (or not) at all times for instance nearest one is only open when the local club uses it which is a shame. |

CW: Sandhurst Joggers has a track session on Friday evenings about 7 I think it is. I'm sure they'd be happy to accommodate you if you wanted to pop along there and join in their track sessions, check their website for cost.
