It's looking like tonight might well be a solo session as one by one my loosely affiliated training group have come up wih their excuses. As that's the case I'm thinking I might give the 1200/400 X 2 a go and see what I can make of it. Worried that I won't manage the speed on my own, though, but there's not really much I can do to help that.

Spr - anything above 300 metres has pacing

Indeed Gobi. Not sure I ever want to suffer the consequences of a badly paced 400m or 800m race.

I got a bit of company tonight but they weren't up for a 1200m effort so we did another set of 400m reps. It still hurt.

Good boy. There's something about the fear you get about 2 minutes before a session, when you know the only thing you can do is get on with it and hurt yourself, which is strangely comforting.
Incidentally I disagree with the bold statement a few pages back, "a 10k session is NOT 6 miles". I'm pretty sure it can be, and often is (roughly), but not always.

JP - ok I guess 10 x 1km or 5 x 2 kms
but as a rule an average person cannot take the strain of 10kms worth of reps
Having done 21 x 400 myself I can confirm that 8.4 kms worth of reps hurt pretty bad

I was too cold out there tonight to feel the fear.
I have to say that 6 miles of effort in a session that isn't a race would kill me.
