Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Yes, I think that is right. You can use any poles I would say, provided you can adjust the length to suit Nordic walking. It is very similar to cross country skiing in that you push backwards onto the poles. Walking, you move the poles one after the other, running you can use the both together for extra push, like you would do x-country skiing.
After only two walks, I am a convert: it is much more fun than plodding run/walking and it puts less strain on my damaged body. I may just stop run walking altogether, 2 weeks after starting it again after a 12 year break. My right knee is niggling, my right IT band is tight and causing a hip niggle and my pes anserinus is tender, all to do with the difficulties my quads have stabilising my right knee, totally without cartilage, bone re-shaped. The joint has been putting out more fluid too, to protect itself. I think my experiment ends here, before I do myself an injury I regret! I mean, it could go either way but right now, I think swapping run/walking for Nordic walking is the way forwards.
In fact, I'd recommend it as recovery too, after hard running workouts. OK, it uses muscles differently, but that is the whole point: diversity counteracts repetitive strain!

Up around a lb to 83.5 after my pig out. Start again today and hopefully it isn’t a disaster.

Morning. -0.4/-0.2%. Good day for me as I'm edging off my weight plateau finally, though my BF% has gone down every day.

One day will not undo the hard work you have done.

That is a good sign with Bodyfat AZX.

^ True, WP

Weight up slightly today but BF down a fair bit. It occurred to me that yesterday I consumed almost 1.6kg of food for 1,500 cals but have not had adequate throughput, and conclude the extra weight is food-in-transit. :-)

The metric I'm most interested in is waist circumference. I measured 101 cm beginning of the month which is just 1 cm below 'danger' level. Hoping for a reduction by beginning of April.

I am similar weight up slightly but BF% down,It is interesting looking at all the data and there always seems like a positive.

I also found on MFP that I had not ticked the garmin negative adjustment seems to have dropped the calories maybe what is needed?

Thanks Hanneke. My right knee problem from mid-Dec was diagnosed by my physio as due to my leg/hip/core muscles not working hard enough to stop the knee from moving inwards toward the left. Hence, why I've been doing a strengthening routine since then (squats, bridge, plank etc.) to build up the muscles to protect the knee. I'm going to try run/walking next week but based on your experience, if the knee proves troublesome and I have to hang up my running shoes, it may be that Nordic Walking is the way to go. I belong to my local U3A and am already wondering if there are other members in a similar position to me - I shall investigate and who knows, maybe when covid restrictions allow I'll find myself organising a NW group? (once I've learnt the correct technique myself!)

Excellent Mel!

Mousey also most interested in waist circumference. I have just bern for a little MTB ride, coffee stop in the middle with a friend, he had cake, I had a slice! Only 18 kms and less than an hour but Garmin says 604 calories burnt!

Came home, changed my muddy legs into gardening gear. The very trousers that popped a button beginning of the year and... Drumroll... They are no longer tight!

Just had a modest lunch, now preparing water and herbal tea and fruit for a few hours gardening.
