posted an intriguing link to an archive of 72 articles published by Frank Horwill on the Serpentine Running Club website. I've dipped into a few and the advice and guidance there is wideranging and reflects maybe a different "time" of advice.

Some of this will undoubtedly be timeless, classic fundamentals. Other stuff will have been superseded by newer, better researched advice. Some stuff may be forgotten gems that are worth revisiting.

Others may disagree - but it felt like these articles deserved a thread of their own ripe for comment / observation.

serpentine.org.uk

I've only dipped into one article so far and been surprised by both the risks of drinking soft water (apparently) and the concept of water loading prior to a marathon (which makes me feel bloated just reading it) serpentine.org.uk

Any that catch your eye for good or ill?

I think there was some chat on this on here a few years ago, some of the (away from the track) advice had already aged badly. Still, if it was good enough for people like Seb Coe and Said Aouita?

Very good, it is basically run fast, lots of recovery, or run not so fast with less recovery, do a tempo run.

Nothing changes. Especially the human body. We just measure it better now.

.18 "They must be on to something, surely" didn't age well.

He thought the Chinese woman were fast because of their training.

It's interesting to reflect that many posts or observations made today may well age poorly in a similar way.

I like OS' last comment.

What 'really' gets people going (and yes we've been here before) is the stuff about race weight. I haven't read it this time but know it's there (I'm a long time Serpie as well as long time Fetchie)

Just wait... it will all kick off! Someone is bound to say 'I'd be a weak SKELETON weighing that little'

(NB it IS a little ambitious....)

The training for 5000m is good, i.e. don't get sucked into short faster reps, you have to do the long ones.

Theres's at least one PhD thesis in this. Actually one probably already exists.
