I've been wearing gloves, taking them off inside out when I get home before I get my keys out, and putting them straight in the washing machine. Then washing my hands. I'm going that's sufficient to mitigate anything I could have picked up outside (not that I touch many, if any, surfaces when it running here).

I've probably only got 3 pairs of gloves. Would have to wash them every couple of days as I run most days. Hmmm, how long does it take to die on a surface? Is it 48 hours?

Thanks Canute. Most farm gates are metal, and while I am running fields and paths, they are on the edge of villages and towns with reasonable population and through put of dog walkers etc.

Happy G, with respect to how many pairs of gloves you might need, if you can dry them in sunlight, I suspect that gloves will probably be OK after a few hours in sunlight. If not in sunlight, I understand that on fabric the virus will survive up to 24 hours. (on plastic, about 2 days).

I don't wear gloves. I wash my hands as soon as I get in.

I've not run much this week, but until it's actually cancelled, I have to assume the LL50 is still going ahead at the end of July and get some miles in for it - or so I keep telling myself, despite not believing for a minute it will actually go ahead.

I can run for a lot of miles without touching a gate and usually without seeing anyone else after the first few minutes.
There are loads of gates, but generally, they're for keeping fly-tippers and hare coursers out, not livestock in, so they nearly all have a path around them. If we are confined to home except for shopping, I shall run to the shops and walk home - as I often do anyway.

Rosehip, I'm continuing to train (until the time comes of total lockdown) for the UTLD100. But I can't see any races being run this year. Those moved to September and October appear to be doomed to me.

I'm continuing to run (and walk) while we are allowed out. It's shopping that bothers me

Sigh
Went out for a 10-mile run at 7:30am, picking a route that was less likely to have people on it. Wore a buff to cover my mouth/nose when passing people. Attempted to maintain a 2 metre zone when I passed people, but within the first half mile I met an elderly woman riding her bike on the pavement, so I ran in the road with my back to the traffic in order to keep a distance. FFS. Rant over.

Same here DT. My thoughts are that Supermarkets are Co-vid 19 incubators. Everybody getting on their high horses about being outside. Surely the risks are dramatically higher in a Supermarket.

About This Thread

Maintained by Canute
Covid-19 case numbers continue to rise exponentially in the UK.

It is even more crucial to do everything we can to slow the rate of onset of new cases. Nonetheless, exercise remains important for our health.

The relevant piece of the legislation in England is:

The Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (England) Regulations 2020

Restrictions on movement

6.—(1) During the emergency period, no person may leave the place where they are living without reasonable excuse.

(2) For the purposes of paragraph (1), a reasonable excuse includes the need—

(a) to obtain basic necessities, including food and medical supplies for those in the same household (including any pets or animals in the household) or for vulnerable persons and supplies for the essential upkeep, maintenance and functioning of the household, or the household of a vulnerable person, or to obtain money, including from any business listed in Part 3 of Schedule 2;

(b) to take exercise either alone or with other members of their household;

-----
That is an abbreviated version. Here is a link to a more comprehensive specification of section 6:
legislation.gov.uk

Similar regulations apply in Scotland, where section 8, (5) (b) states:
(b) to take exercise, either alone or with other members of their household.
In Northern Ireland, section 5 (2) (b) is the same:
(b) to take exercise either alone or with other members of their household;

In Wales, the regulations state that you can leave the house no more than once a day for exercise, The relevant section [section 8] states:

(b) to take exercise, no more than once a day, either alone or with other members of the household.

-----------

Here is a link to the guidance regarding a reasonable excuse to leave the house, issued by the National Police Chiefs Council (for England):

Note added 26th May: unfortunately the clear guidelines issued in April have been taken down and replaced by a more complex collection of documents.
-------------

The fact that the government accepts the importance of exercise places a responsibility on us to exercise in a way that reduces our risk of becoming a clinical case rather than increasing our risk.

Here is a review of the factors that influence the relationship between exercise and function of the immune system
