Can't help thinking that the Government would greatly help itself if it laid out clearly what the criteria are for ending the lockdown and engaged the public in working with it to meet some defined targets. Continually asking a population with a collective low attention span and in large part no contact with the health impact of the virus, as high and dreadful as the numbers are in the context of the whole UK population they still leave most of the population with no direct connection to someone with it, to do something for an undefined period of time (I think the idea that the lockdown will end after 3 weeks has largely lost all credibility already) is asking to be ignored by a significant minority element of the population.

They all so don't seem to have any concept that for a large number of people in London (and other major cities) it is impossible to get access to fresh air without leaving their homes, they simply don't have any outside space of their own.

Brock well park is 50 hectares. If 3000 in there were spaced evenly, that gives 150m2 each (ok, they would be imperfectly spaced, but also some would be in couples or family groups).

London is not the whole of the UK, it's not even representative of every city in the UK. And in practical terms, the numbers of police available would make blanket lockdown nigh on unenforceable outside the most densely populated areas.

So i am about to run now and shall be selecting a specially dull route next to a main road so I have plenty of space and not the canal which is nearby and nice to run on.

The canal of course is nice to walk on, ride on , run on, boat on and live on .

Safety first, mainly mine :¬)

There's some evidence that vitamin D helps support the immune system, so that's another reason that being able to go outside is important, particularly for people without gardens.

Agree. The sound and sight of three kestrels having a dust-up has just given me a huge lift

"it laid out clearly what the criteria are for ending the lockdown and engaged the public in working with it to meet some defined targets. "

There is no endgame and no route out of the lockdown.

This is the problem. Because there is no plan.

They cannot put defined targets because they don't want them.

On my walk today I had sight of a popular cycle and walking path, the deeside way, it looked busy, we met one other person on the pavement next to the road we were walking on. Normally I would be running on the deeside way and it’s never that busy.

I went out earlyish and avoided the deeside way as it's pretty busy at the moment. We came back along North Deeside Road and we crossed to the other side if we met any runners or cyclists, quite easy to do when virtually no cars on the roads.

Sigh
What grinds my gears is that the folks I know who do no exercise at all from one year to the next are the most vociferous in supporting a complete ban, almost as if it justifies their lifestyle. I'm generally avoiding mainstream social media, and staying on here, it's far nicer :-)

About This Thread

Maintained by Canute
Covid-19 case numbers continue to rise exponentially in the UK.

It is even more crucial to do everything we can to slow the rate of onset of new cases. Nonetheless, exercise remains important for our health.

The relevant piece of the legislation in England is:

The Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (England) Regulations 2020

Restrictions on movement

6.—(1) During the emergency period, no person may leave the place where they are living without reasonable excuse.

(2) For the purposes of paragraph (1), a reasonable excuse includes the need—

(a) to obtain basic necessities, including food and medical supplies for those in the same household (including any pets or animals in the household) or for vulnerable persons and supplies for the essential upkeep, maintenance and functioning of the household, or the household of a vulnerable person, or to obtain money, including from any business listed in Part 3 of Schedule 2;

(b) to take exercise either alone or with other members of their household;

-----
That is an abbreviated version. Here is a link to a more comprehensive specification of section 6:
legislation.gov.uk

Similar regulations apply in Scotland, where section 8, (5) (b) states:
(b) to take exercise, either alone or with other members of their household.
In Northern Ireland, section 5 (2) (b) is the same:
(b) to take exercise either alone or with other members of their household;

In Wales, the regulations state that you can leave the house no more than once a day for exercise, The relevant section [section 8] states:

(b) to take exercise, no more than once a day, either alone or with other members of the household.

-----------

Here is a link to the guidance regarding a reasonable excuse to leave the house, issued by the National Police Chiefs Council (for England):

Note added 26th May: unfortunately the clear guidelines issued in April have been taken down and replaced by a more complex collection of documents.
-------------

The fact that the government accepts the importance of exercise places a responsibility on us to exercise in a way that reduces our risk of becoming a clinical case rather than increasing our risk.

Here is a review of the factors that influence the relationship between exercise and function of the immune system
