I think the evil bit of Ruth Wilson's Mrs Coulter is good. Very subtle and menacing. And her challenge of relationship with Lyra is intriguing and quite disturbing.

I thought the gyptians were better in the movie - shouldn't their boats be beautifully kept and decorated, like a travellers caravan. It's their pride n joy. But they've made them more urban. Maybe I just like the romanticism. I suppose real travelling folk just have utility, modern caravans too.

Lyra would be a hard one to get right. She's such a character in the book. Maybe when it becomes more action and heroism Dafne Keen will shine?

I love the steampunk bits of the world. I was surprised they introduced a cut between worlds so early, but it certainly makes it interesting for someone who doesn't know the book order.

Production values still feel a bit BBC Dr Who ish! Not bad, but not movie quality.

I think the sinister, serious bits are working for me. The music and ambience are very eerie. I was quite tense at some points. The magisterium are properly horrific. Crushing that poor woman's butterfly daemon. Ewww. *shudders* :-) G

But you do have to say - bad choice of daemon. That's just asking for trouble

You could make so much more of the deamons. It's such a fascinating metaphor for "soul" or "spirit" or even "ego". Do you have a wolf daemon because you are aggressive / territorial / loyal. Or are you those things because of your daemon? So who would have a butterfly? Someone who flits from subject to subject, interested in everything, but settling on nothing - like a journalist, in fact?! But while it's flexible, it makes you vulnerable. It's a very rich type of analogy for character, I always thought. :-) G

And when Mrs C hit her daemon, they have built up the importance and closeness to your daemon, so that was really shocking to me, as a viewer. Very effective.

For me that analogy is when you "hate yourself" or beat yourself up over a failing. Which is a painful experience, and very self destructive. It's a very powerful tool that PP creates. :-) G

Fragile Do Not Bend
I was wondering how she had got that far without it being eaten by a bird or something 😅

FDNB - that would still be murder, and even the Magisterium can't do that in the open (yet).
