I'm staying at a hotel in T4, Heathrow next weekend and hoping to get a Sunday long run in. Anywhere between 6-10 miles. Happy to do loops/laps. But need it to be safe (lone running, early morning) and preferably on footpaths. Any ideas? I've checked the routes map and no one has saved any this side of Heathrow. Thanks! |

@ChrisHB might have an idea? He's run most places and I think I can specifically remember him talking about some Heathrow running.

I stayed at a T4 hotel back in 2021. T5 was still closed and although my hotel was at the end of the road I couldn't find anywhere to do even a short run. No pavements, some crash barriers and security guards. If I'd had more time then I could have taken the bus back to the area with pavements and I might have been able to run then.

Try London loop which you can pick up near Hatton Cross. There will be some boring stuff out on the A4 to get there though. Alternatively, harmondsworth moor is worth a visit if you can get there easily. Sandwiched between motorways and the airport it's surprisingly nice.

Also if you are staying on/near A30 you can run down clock house lane to Bedfont Lakes and do laps. Nice park about 1.8m around the edges in the main park. Run there isn't much fun though, pavements wide enough but lots of traffic. We used to live nearby and there are some nice places but they are all squished between awful roads. Donkey wood from Hatton Cross is probs the best option. Just keep heading out on the path and turn around when had enough. |

If you get the tube to Hatton Cross you could also run along the River Crane to Cranford country park (the opposite direction to Donkey Wood). I don't know how safe it is on a Sunday morning, I've just been there for an evening race once. I've also done a 5k race around Harmondsworth Moor but I think that might be a bit lonely and it's the wrong side of the airport. Or, if you are happy to go a bit further on the tube you could go to Osterley and run there if the grounds are open early enough. Or take the Elizabeth line to Southall. |

I have run round the airport a few times in the past - about 10 miles IIRC and 95% on pavements, the rest on a mown verge - but there used to be a place where the road crossed a taxiway - a sort of level crossing - and that's now closed so I don't know how far the diversion will be. I'd go with Curly's suggestions. It is possibly the least pleasant bit of the London Loop, though. I'm afraid I cannot find a record of the routes I took. Incidentally, getting out of T4 on foot requires Macchiavellian skill and possibly the need to be a little bit illegal and unsafe. Why not enjoy yourself and hop on a bus to Richmond and run along the river or round the park? But be warned that buses are incredibly slow. |

Have you asked the hotel? I think with a bit of planning you could use any of the walkways to get to The Hilton or Premier Inn, and from there to Perimeter Road, which is mostly paved. Although lots of traffic, there are the planes on the other side. Am I allowed to link this? strava.com Or this one fetcheveryone.com/routes-view.php?id=380078 |
