Bob!
Tarange
I started 6 mile Sub 70's in November at 10.30mm pace. By Jan I was down to sub 9mm.
It's a bit erratic atm with all the miles for FLM training, but it certainly gave me the base to improve!

Well done T - solid start - and good to see you're not ready to throw your HRM at us just yet!
To back up what Bobby boy said - I started at nearer 11mm for 70% many moons ago, but mostly around 9:20 pace now, sometimes below 9!

Oh it works
Find a hill and do the test that Parker suggests in his book - but do it HARD, you should be on your knees close to puking at the end of it!

I've been training to heart rate but slightly higherr than Parker advises lately and I seem to be getting better results than training at mainly sub 70%. I still do my recovery runs at sub 70% but my long runs start at sub 70% and gradually get upto around 78%. I do general aerobic runs which tend to be sub 75%.
At the end of January, I did 13.10 miles in 2:01, which worked out at 9:15/mile at a hr of 150bpm. A couple of days ago I did 12.00 miles in 1:41, average pace 8:25/mile at a hr of 149bpm. The 13 miles was meant to be done purely sub 70%. The 12 miles was done sub 70% for 1st 4 miles next 4 miles sub 75% and final 4 miles sub 78%.
Before this I've been training to Parker for 3 or 4 months with little change or improvement on my training runs. My race pace has improved but if my training runs are improving surely my race pace has to be improving more too than if my training pace stayed the same.
Im sure Hendo will be offended by me putting this on here but it shows you dont always have to train sub 70% to get something out of heart rate monitor training. Im not knocking Parker but there is more than one way to train to heart rate.
It might make a difference to try something slightly different if things arent going as well as you hoped.

Ian - I get offended by nothing - I just let people know my own experiences and thoughts tis all. As you have been told (by others) before, I go against parker in many things I do.
Sharing our experiences and advising on that basis is what we are about.

Tarange - do stick at the HR training....I started out at 12+ min mile pace at first, about a year ago, and now can manage about 10:45 min miles. The most rapid improvement, I have to say, came after I joined the local running club at the end of January and started to do more fast sessions (about 5.5 miles at an almost uncompfortable pace). After this I found I could do the same route faster each time, AND my HR for the same route has gradually come down, from 85% to 80% AND the 70% runs have shown an improvmeent in pace.
I spent almost all my time doing runs of <70% for the first 6-7 months, though, to build a good endurance base, and to keep myself relatively free of injury.
So...keep at it, don't get depressed when you have an off day and seem to be going backwards; it will pay off in the end!

...oops! not sure where the rest of that went!
less than 70% for the first 6-7 months to build a good endurance base and keep free of injury.
So don't let it get you down if you have an off day....stick at it and it will pay off in the end!!

Like Hendo I have got down to around about 9 -9.20 m/m at less than 70% WHR from a starting point last summer of about 13 m/m.
Whats the best improvement in pace that anyone on this board has made? Has anyone managed to get to 8 m/m pace or lower??
