I'd have to plagiarise the schedules to answer that, Girlie. But I think if you're at the stage of doing speedwork, BB's suggestion of making one of those hard sessions a MP run sounds like a good one

A65- so could I occassionally swap a tempo run of 85% for a MP run at 10:30-11:00/mi ( probably 75-80%) or am i better doing up to half of a longer run at MP every few weeks?
It gets very complicated this marathon training and I'm trying to make sure I am as well prepared as I can be, and learn from you guys.

Thinking back to my training, I never actually trained at MP this year for Boston.
I did general runs and LSR's at 70% celing (even slower for some LSRs), and then intervals, hill sessions or tempo runs at considerably faster than MP. Maybe I need to fix this.
Girlie - as V-rap says, just have a little look what people have said. This is a very complex topic, and there IS NO RIGHT ANSWER!! I would have thought that for your first marathon, lots of slow mileage is key - much more important that speedwork

I'd agree absolutely with BB, Girlie. If you want to start your first marathon uninjured and cross the finish-line still running, building an aerobic base with lots of slow miles is much more important than doing anything fancy with hills or intervals.
What I didn't realise till I'd been running for several years is that there's no way of rushing aerobic adaptation. It takes a finite time for your body to become a runner's body, with lots of mitochondria and capillaries and efficient fuel-burning systems. And that's not weeks, it's years. Prepare now for your first marathon in November, but be confident that it will not be your fastest or most personally satisfying (from a performance aspect) marathon unless you never do another. You will kepp improving

Cheers guys, at the moment speedwork is off the schedule because of my achilles/adductor problem, but is being slowly re-introduced, so may try a section of hard day at MP to see how things go.
Am aiming to do Gt Eastern HM at MP though with Features.

Glad to hear that the HR theory is going to be developed more here, Mr Fetch.
However, much as I am totally enamoured with the theory, I do feel there needs to be a health warning on the attainment of maximum HR!! I am now nursing some sprained (strained?) quads which are taking far longer than I'd like to heal, as a result of "giving it my all" up some hills to check my max HR! I tried to follow all the advice about warming up, stretching, etc, but something obviously twanged!
It's so frustrating, having to stop running just when I was beginning to get into the ryhthm of the 70% runs. Still, better sort it out now and stand a chance of doing the GER with Girlie injury-free.

Girlie, some good advice here. All I can say really is that buidling your endurance base is teh most critical factor in making sure you enjoy your mara. Get the LSRs right and don't worry too much about speedwork at the moment if at all for your first mara.
Great work btw Girlie, you are doing very well.

Girlie - in answer to one of your earlier posts.... The increasing HR with lower pace is classic Cardiac Drift. It was in a run over greater than an hour, so not really a problem. What it did indicate was that you were reaching the limit of your endurance for the pace. This is something that you will train out with more miles, and more time on your feet at an aerobic intensity. And d0n't worry about your marathon pace yet.... concentrate on making yourself into an endurance monster first! The pace you can work on later!
