Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

(risking the wrath of Gobi - but Dr Velociraptor is one of a few women of a certain age for whom HR training doesn't sit as well as it does for younger men.)

J2R and Rosehip proving why I dont bother.

It's not about wrath

I am trying not to be confrontational so I back away when it is obvious the only outcome is confrontation.

I'm outta here

Looby Loo, while you’re clarifying your HR numbers, a good rule of thumb is that your general training pace should be about three minutes per mile off your 5k pace, or 90 seconds slower than half marathon pace.

If those two numbers are about the same then that’s reassuring!

Those two numbers for me are about a minute apart.

Can I chip in?

LL - looks like your first couple of peaks in the most recent intervals were a lot higher than others and I'd guess they were possibly incorrect readings as later minute reps all seemed to be in high 170s. Saying that 190 might be a decent approximation of max as short intervals unlikely to get you to max HR.

I agree to an extent with Dvorak that low HR training works best when you are able to dedicate a lot of training hours to it. Saying that if you're training 4 hours with 3 of those as easy, but not easy bringing the HR down in these but doing the same mileage should give you extra training time and make the faster stuff more manageable as you're carrying less fatigue from running in a grey zone.

I think it takes patie

Doh, typing on phone.

... takes patience to train by HR but if you get your zones right the rewards are there and you become a less injury prone and faster runner over distance events.

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
