I do like a lively thread....

AndrewS - another thanks from me for your contributions, I'm going to re-read them a couple of times to make sure they sink in!

DMZ - I think what you're saying is akin to my experiences and whilst having seen 159 in the last few weeks with the new watch, I reckon my max for training zone purposes will be 165.

SSLP - do you class all sub LT running as aerobic? Or do you use a certain %age of max to keep the 80/20 balance in your training?

Brunski- would be happy to elaborate/explain anything in there if needed. They aren't the most coherent pieces that I have ever written ;)

SSLHP (Shoes smell like horse piss)
Brunski - I consider Lactate Threshold (or Tempo) as being around 87% (the limit of running for an hour without drop in pace or raise in HR), but Aerobic Threshold as being around 75%/77%. It's the latter that I use as a guide to the 80/20 training

SSLHP - I presume the 80%/20% is by time, not distance?

Personally, I get nowhere near 20%... last week I barely made it above 10% (by time), and I'd say that's fairly typical.

SSLHP - cheers for the zones, will bear them in mind!

What is the zone between Aerobic and Threshold zones for - Is this the grey area mentioned in the sidebar that you should stay out of if you're after improving fitness?

I know there's not likely to be a definitive answer to this, but if someone marathon trained using the 80/20 ratio, but instead of dipping into the aerobic zone for 80% they trained in the grey zone instead, how much slower do we think they would be, all other things being equal? Say a 90 minutes half already in the bag, moving up to marathon?

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
