I actually train with my watch showing just the time. In non track races I have a screen that shows distance and elapsed time. Track I use a standard Timex watch.

Basically means even if I do glance at my watch, I'm not overloaded with info.
P.S. Time means clock time not stopwatch.

SPR - Yeah good idea, I'm not quite there but a lot of my running is simply to/from work, and variations on that...and I only really look at the watch if I decide to push it up to keep it in a certain HR band, usually I just pootle along at a steady effort...

So I said I'd report back on today's Dewsbury 10krace and here goes...
Briefly:
36:47 chip time 65th place 5th MV40 category.
The run:
Didn't look at watch at all but on examining after I went out far too quick (3rd fastest mile recorded on Strava)...Settled into a decent pace shortly after that, but was being passed by groups of people all the way 'out' - I realised I couldn't stick with these people passing me so just drafted for a bit until the next group caught me.
The turn was a good 100-150m after the 5km board - bit odd, for a straight out and back...
On the way back I saw people I normally race with/behind (further reinforcing that I'd gone out quick, it later turns out they were running strong, and catching me quick). I was passed again on the way back by several people and think I only caught one (a fellow struggler).
The splits are below

Not looking at my watch I wasn't able to 'sort the dodgy bits) but I think it fair to think my average for each mile would have been within 5-10 bpm of the max (mile 5 looks about right).
I measured the course over 6.3 miles, everyone I spoke to had it 6.3-6.35, those that had run last year said the cones at the turn were further up the road than before. strava has me running 10km in 36:19, here shows 36:20 - so not as upset as I was when I turned the last corner and saw the gun time approaching 37 minutes.
Lessons to take away:
- I need to go out a bit (lot) steadier - a couple of 5:50-5:55 miles at the start would have hopefully allowed me more energy to take advantage of the slight slope on the way back - I tried to pick it up after the turn but didn't have the legs for it... - my HRM needs monitoring as when it goes wrong it takes a while to get back on track...not a problem when looking at it 'drop off' but is when looking afterwards. - I'm not experienced enough to run a 10km I don't know without some feedback from a watch. - people in Dewsbury can't measure a course. The winner was almost a minute slower than he was last year, 10.2km is tougher than 10km.
- Overall, With better pacing, and on a better measured course, I think I can break 36mins and hopefully get close to 35 as the year progresses.

Good report, and well saved (given you went out too hard, you still held it to 6:00 or better).
Funny how people always think that this year's course is long, whereas the other alternative is probably more likely....;-)

Cheers PTB, disappointed I went out at 3k pace but like you say I adjusted and held it together pretty well and avoided a death march up the last mile or 2.
Everyone on strava has it as 6.3 miles, mine measures courses short normally. Anyhow, everyone ran the same distance

Concur with PtB Re report and maintaining pace after too fast start. Decent run and you can learn from it. Given you did that without looking at your watch, your pace judgement isn't bad and maybe just need to curb enthusiasm at the start. If you focus more on how pace/ running feels to you (internal feedback) in training, pace judgement will improve further. As I said though it's pretty decent already and this race might have already taught you what going out too fast feels like so you might be OK going forward.
In the meantime a glance at pace in the first mile to keep you in check might be in order.

Certainly wouldn't do this during a race, it's just another distraction. What matters is how fast you can run, not whether your HRM is correct or not.

Thanks SPR, agree completely. I was too giddy (and perhaps cocky) at the start and it was when people started passing me and I knew I wasn't going to be able to hold their pace that I knew I had to ease off!
Think I learnt a lot from today, and s glance at pace at the start would be beneficial. Agree about not worrying about the HRM when racing but in training I'll continue to adjust when it goes wonky!
