Yeah we've sort of done my dodgy HR readings to death if I'm honest Huntsman. You, and before you Paul the builder and SPR have done well picking out the dodgy runs... Yes there are some, but there's also a lot that aren't dodgy at all and match the HR I was experiencing at the time.

Basically I now have a pretty good idea when I'm running if the HR readings are correct, and the examples I've put above have been when it's been behaving. The HR graphs on strava tell me straight away when it's gone a little dodgy, whereas the mile HR readings on here pick up and highlight/exaggerate every discrepancy.

I'm also not a slave to the HRM. If i see it acting up I look at the contact on it and adjust, and it comes back reading correctly bang where I think it ought to by effort (usually guess and get it within 5 BPM)

I could put up loads of runs that do match the HR effort.

I'm aware of the +15 secs per mile, but thought maybe I wasn't running the weekly parkrun quite at my top effort (should get closer average to max), so thought with a few eat days I could maybe hit a similar pace over 10k that I was seeing over 5k. My PB is 36:34 from early December, and wondered if I might be able to get under 36. I guess only Sunday will tell, then hopefully if the HRM behaves I might get some useful data again, to further compare pace at each HR.

*rest not eat days.

and apologies if that maybe comes across wrong, it sounds quite defensive on re-reading but genuinely think I know when my HRM is playing nicely, and believe the figures.

Cheers Huntsman, I think it's through racing I can really benchmark any improvements ...If it all goes well?

If I come back on here on Monday with a 190bpm and 39:55 or something I'll stick my tail firmly between my legs and crawl back under my rock 😂😂

My HRM wasn't working for my 10k in December so hopefully will on Sunday!

Brunski - Ignoring HR stats, there's no reason why you shouldn't try for sub 36. You're close enough from your previous recent race that it isn't stupid to try (unless you faded in that race?) and you don't know unless you try. TBH if you want to give it an all out or bust go and it's a flat course, I'd aim for the pace and not even look at HR (I never have it in races anyway).

Don't even look at pace - just run hard!

I'd agree with that (obviously don't want to go of at 5mm pace though), easier when you have people to race.

Cheers guys, appreciate the advice...I'll do my best not to look at the watch at all for this one.

From what I've been told the course is pretty flat; a small dip at the start, then a very slight climb to halfway, with the opposite on the way back.

Brunski, some good advice there and the signs are you are ready to run a great time.

FWIW though I think you need to either ditch your HRM or get a new one. There are too many spurious readings either for whole runs or parts of runs in there for it to give any real indication as to what is going on.

Thanks Baz, yeah I'm in 2 minds about my HRM, and it might well be stubbornness on my part but I think I get enough out of it to focus my training and when I see spurious readings I adjust the contact to my wrist and get back on it!

I remember having odd readings when using the chest strap with my old Garmin, and it's much more comfortable wearing it on the wrist...if (possibly) slightly less accurate.
