I have only used the manual lap at London where I know I can trust the mile markers and where I also know there are big GPS errors.
I agree it should work regardless even if mile markers are out, it will even itself out, unless there is a course measurement issue as well which is part of the cause of mile markers being out.
I keep a close eye on the discrepancy between GPS and markers but to be honest when it matters:
a) I have been beyond the mental maths b) it didnt matter anyway as I had either missed or beaten the target (usually missed)
SIS orange and indeed any orange I will miss out - vile

I run with a pace band and have a standard stopwatch and check it at infrequent mile markers. I also wear a Garmin and have only really had an accuracy issue at London.

I’ve been experimenting with veloforte gels. More compact to carry and interesting flavours that aren’t sickly sweet. Beetroot and lemon anyone?

I must admit I struggle to see how a marathon, even a big one, would present any bigger risk than a football match. So if soccerball matches get cancelled, maybe fair enough to cancel a marathon. If not, I'll be grumpy.

We certainly aren't there yet and might never get to that point (and I agree that a primarily local running race isn't the most obvious target for cancellation) but there is a pretty clear direction of travel as to how things are changing.
