jda - don't worry, the "hill" at half-way is the same as we ran in 2016 and 2015 and 2014 and...

It must be nearly race day, as the road closure warning signs have gone up... maybe I should think about a long run!?!? I know that race day is going to hurt and it’s going to be my slowest GMM.

They are offering a prize for running mile 19 faster than your average pace for marathon. Ridiculous facebook.com

I'm out - missed 4 weeks with achilles probs, and now got a cold. For me, it's too far to travel to just jog around, if I was closer I'd probably still do it.

Hope you all have a great run, weather forecast looks not too bad at all

They've withdrawn that competition now - a good example of listening to feedback and reacting! Shame they haven't done that about the gels. I was aware they were using a gel you can't currently purchase; not a huge deal to me because I'll carry my own nutrition, but a bit of a shame for quite an expensive marathon given the advice not to use anything new on race day. But just went to read the info on this and was surprised to read "our nutrition partner... do not produce gels and have therefore sourced ... gels for participants... these gels are not currently available for purchase"

Why does a marathon have a nutrition partner that doesn't cater for runners??

Yes good news about the 19 mile silliness. I'll be sticking to my SIS gels. I'll need all the energy I can get given how under prepared/trained I am.

Really sorry to hear that Gus, you've not had much luck with marathons recently :-(

I obviously interpreted "faster than your average pace" a lot differently to the outraged masses on Facebook... if I keep my pace the same in the 19th mile as the average up to then, then that pace is more than likely going to be quicker than my whole race average when the (hopefully slight) slowdown sets in at some point during the last 10km? So the aim should be to maintain the pace for as long as possible. It wasn't a competition to run your fastest mile at mile 19, or speed up, or even run a mile quicker than your pace over the previous miles!

They probably meant something more like that, but I think it’s a daft idea
