Managed to slog round Irwell 20 miler yesterday at reasonable pace for me. I really enjoyed it . Although not wearing any rain gear was in hindsight a mistake. Being wet is one thing but for first time since I started running 5 years ago my core temperature fell towards end of race. By time I got to end I was very very cold. Lesson learned. Had gear in my car after all.

One week to go for another 20 miles (jog round north Cheshire) and then taper.... come round so quick.

It was certainly character building! I was freezing in my jacket :-o

Hat and perhaps also gloves can provide very effective lightweight protection when you don't want to be too overburdened. Relatively easy to take off and stow if you get hot too (eg tuck into waist band). Getting decidedly spring-like round here but I can't see that lasting...

I was wearing a cap, buff, gloves, and a base layer and shirt under my jacket! Nothing short of full body waterproofs would've been effective in those conditions. I do a lot of mountain ultras and it was right up there in terms of horribleness. Great fun :-)

I suspect jda's comment was directed at Spanners, not yourself Kinky.

So "life" has got in the way of my training again. I therefore volunteered to run the first leg for one of our Corporate Challenge relay teams (starting at 9:30am). Once I've handed over the baton to the next runner I'll then continue with the rest of the run, with the aim of hopefully beating both teams (about 3:30). It will be interesting to see how congested the course is as I try to pass some of the pace busses.

Yes, I definitely agree that serious weather needs serious clothing for anything over a very short run. But for a race when you aren't that sure, a hat is a simple lightweight option that makes a huge difference - perhaps more so for us baldies but even people with hair can lose a lot of heat through an uncovered head. And back on topic, on a sunny April day in Manchester it has the reverse effect (see avatar pic for details)!

Hill runs seem to be the latest thing to train for the flatest of flat Marathons. While in Ironbridge this morning I had to get up the Wreakin and back before breakfast. What is this madness?

Speedy Rob - the "climb" through Altrincham was described by Windsor Wool as "the top of Mount Everest" a couple of years back - best to be well prepared ;-)

jda I agree on comments on kit. I wore a cap but weather so bad wearing anything else borderline pointless. It was crazy wet. Wd not have it any other way though. If it was always fair that wd be a bit dull. Hoping Manchester is however drier

Just in case anybody didn't get the email yesterday, the Race Booklet is now available to download from greatermanchestermarathon.com

I don't think I've spotted any mistakes (yet).

You can also find out your race number at chiprace.co.uk if you can't wait until the postman comes in the next few weeks.
