We had a teacher like that at primary school too. Was it part of teacher training?!

I think I missed that session...

To β€œplease can I have a biscuit?” my father always answered β€œyou can but you may not”

That sounds very familiar :)

The 'can I get' phrase is a constant battle I have with my youngest, especially in shops and cafes. he'll ask "can I get a coke" and I'll annoy him by saying "no, you don't work here and you're not allowed behind the counter".

"Can" instead of "will" annoys the life out of me. Or even "can you do ..." instead of simply just "do".

Ex had a job back when Thatcher still roamed the earth where her boss used to ask her in a whiny, sing-song voice, "Oh darling, could you just bear to... ?" do whatever she wanted doing. I would have lasted about 40 minutes. Ex spent the whole summer there.

Please can I ask whether the word germane can apply to things or is it only used when referring to language? Specifically, can food be prepared germanely (ie appropriately for the use - cucumbers sliced, grapes peeled)? If not, other suggested wordds would be very much appreciated. I've run out of adverbs in my DT curriculum document!!

I wouldn't use it in that sense at all. It may be germane that the food has been appropriately prepared, but I wouldn't say that carries forward to allow the usage that it has been germanely prepared.

Agree with Dvorak

Germane cf relevant, pertinent. Slightly different to appropriate.
