Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Mac - I'm not saying the "rules" aren't useful - they're a good place to start if you don't know your audience, to avoid that kind of misunderstanding. But language changes all the time, and the greater emphasis on grammar in the written form compared to speaking, is the main reason the two are diverging so quickly - thus, I would postulate, making written grammar more difficult to grasp for today's kids than it was for us (because it bears less of a resemblance to the language they hear/use every day when speaking).

There. I started a sentence with 'but'.

I often deviate slightly from the strict "rules" when writing professionally, but deliberately, and for effect. The problem, if you go too far, is that some pedants will assume it's merely because you don't KNOW the "rules", and think you/your client must be thick. So always one to do advisedly.

And now, instead of talking about writing, I'd better go and do some.

There are, of course, far, far too many commas in that post, but I can't edit it now.

English has never really responded well to rules, has it? A lot of them are just artifical constructs, imposed by grammarians to try and make sense of our lingo.
I do like the West Country" No, I not never' ad none of that" in reply to an accusation of thieving. Emphatic, not a self contradiction.
You wouldn't write it mind!

Yes indeed. Multiple negatives are our heritage. You can find them in Anglo Saxon texts!
